MAS Meeting and Artist Talk on May 16

Join us this Friday, May 16, at 11 am at the McLean Community Center for a free demonstration by Leigh Culver @leighculverart

She will talk about ‘Sunflowers in Visual Culture.’ Many diverse movements used sunflowers as emblems and so many artists have turned to sunflowers for extended inspiration.  (Van Gogh, Cassatt, Klimt, Egon Schiele, Piet Mondrian, Emil Nolde, Faith Ringgold, Joan Mitchell, Grace Hartigan, Anselm Kiefer, etc.)

Leigh is an art historian, teacher, and painter.  She holds a doctorate in Art History from the University of Pennsylvania and taught American Art for the University of Notre Dame’s Washington Program for over a decade.  Prior to teaching, she worked in the curatorial departments at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and in education at the Corcoran Gallery of Art.  Leigh returned to her studio art roots in 2006, studying at the Art League in Alexandria, Virginia.  She has won multiple watercolor awards in the Mid-Atlantic region and recently served as President of the Potomac Valley Watercolorists.  She has taught advanced watercolor at The Art League School and since the pandemic has been teaching a series of online Zoom classes called “Mining Art History for Inspiration,” melding her art history and painting backgrounds.  You can find her website at leighculverart.com and follow her @leighculverart.

The event takes place on Friday, April 25, at 11 am at the McLean Community Center (Stedman room), located at  1234 Ingleside Avenue in McLean, VA. The demo is free and open to the public, and all ages are welcome to attend.
